移動する物品にICタグやバーコードなどの個体識別ツール、あるいはビーコン（電源付きアクティブ型）の個体識別ツールを取付け、その管理対象物品を移動するたびに、位置情報をスマホややゲートウェイなどのスマートデバイスを経由して、データをサーバに登録する。サーバに登録されたデータにより、物品の最新位置と移動履歴がデータリスト及びマップ上に表示される。
